Paula Nadelstern on CBS

Sunday August 16, 2009 features Paula Nadelstern on CBS Sunday morning. Kaleidoscopes have come a long way from those cardboard tubes you may remember looking into as a child. Serena Altschul takes us to a Kaleidoscope maker's studio, and to the American Folk Art Museum in New York City, where Kaleidoscope quilts surround the kaleidoscopes that inspired them.

This is the American Folk Art Museum's first one person exhibition highlighting the work of a contemporary quilt artist. Paula Nadelstern has achieved international recognition for her innovative and complex designs inspired by the bilateral symmetry of kaleidoscopic images. Her artistic vision encompasses science, history, and tradition, expressed in crystalline patterns composed of slivers of jewel-like fabrics.

After Festival I visited some of the best bead stores ever! Bohemian Crystal, crystals, beads of all kinds, knowledgeable staff, good prices. Who could ask for anything more?

Up and down the street there are shops everywhere. My favorite for sequins is Berger Beads. No picture, I guess the shopping just got in the way!

Hello from Long Beach

It is hot here in Long Beach at Festival where it's hot, hot, hot! The thermometer is at 85 degrees with way too much humidity! Who knew?

Went to the prevew great quilts! Lots of shopping happening!

Cosmic Dream

Usually I have more ideas than I can put into action. I think that traveling in space would be fantastic. I took the opportunity to combine this outer worldly desire with my love of glittery things. Normally the work seems to flow naturally. This time, however I struggled. I sewed many samples before the piece became reality.

This work started as a piece of white cotton cloth. I painted the background with dye, foiled the stars and then machine quilted overall with a variety of specialty threads.

I might get an idea from a color scheme in a diner, or from a fabric, or a new technique I want to try. Most of the time they come from a physical place maybe the flowers in a garden or an exotic location I visited.

Cotton and silk fabrics machine pieced. Over laid with paint sticks and quilted with a variety of specialty threads.

What's New in the Studio

New happenings in the photo studio, Bonnie McCaffery is here to film my first DVD, Paint, Glorious Paint. Three days of complete concentration. Yes, it's harder than it looks.

Nothing like two for one, Brenda Henning is here filming too. I am finished, she’s on today.
