New York City on Foot

A number of years ago I found the most interesting web site called Free Tours by Foot. The tours, offer you to pay-what-you-wish for New York walking tours as well as food, bike and bus tours.  You get to determine what a tour was worth, if anything, after the tour, thus ensuring that your tour guide must strive to give his or her best on every tour. New York is an expensive city so finding a way to experience the city in an affordable manner is really great.

Of course I like the shopping tours where we hit the second-hand stores and thrift shops. I was introduced to New York’s favorite charity shops where stores offer new and gently worn contemporary clothing, as well as vintage clothing bearing a higher price tag than thrift shops where the prices are a lot lower, and of course vintage jewelry. While I didn't buy anything, this time, it is great to check out all the shops.

Walking on the streets checking out the buildings is a treat. Of course the building form most closely associated with New York City is the skyscraper.  But I must admit I like the character of New York's residential districts which is defined by the elegant brownstone rowhouses, townhouses, and shabby tenements that were built during a period of rapid expansion from 1870 to 1930.
